Two people have died after they were hit by South West Trains services within minutes of each other.

Paramedics and the police rushed to New Malden station on Tuesday after reports a man had been hit.

They arrived at 12.30pm but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Just 15 minutes later, another man was struck by a train at Woking.

Despite the efforts of paramedics from the South East Coast Ambulance Service, he also died.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said neither incident was being treated as suspicious.

Police officers are now urgently trying to trace the families of both men.

South West Trains warned the incidents were causing major disruption on routes to and from London Waterloo.

Trains have been cancelled or delayed by up to two hours, with the disruption expected to last for the rest of the day.

In a statement on its site, the operator said: “Two separate incidents involving a person hit by a train have taken place between Waterloo and Woking.

“As of 2.30pm, all lines have now reopened however due to the length of time they were closed significant disruption is expected to continue until the end of the day.”
