200-a-side football game man dies

12 April 2012

A man has died after taking part in a 200-a-side football match.

He was found collapsed, wearing shin pads, a rugby shirt and boots, after the end of day one of the two-day Ashbourne Shrovetide Football Game, in Derbyshire. He was pronounced dead at hospital.

The man, who is described as middle-aged, had no visible signs of injury and police are not treating his death as suspicious.

A one-minute silence was being held on Wednesday in honour of the player, who is still to be formally identified.

John Hanson, secretary of the Ashbourne Shrovetide Committee, said the man was a regular participant in the annual event, adding: "Everybody is feeling shocked."

The ambulance service called police shortly before 9pm on Tuesday after finding the man in Park Road, Ashbourne.

He was taken to the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary where he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

The aim of the Shrovetide game, which dates back to the 12th century, is for the two teams to "goal" a ball by touching it three times against the opposition's post.

There are no restrictions on how the ball can be moved.
