26 injured as bus and lorry collide

12 April 2012

More than 20 people were injured when a bus was in collision with a skip lorry.

Humberside Fire Service said a total of 26 people were hurt in the accident on the A18 on the outskirts of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire.

A spokesman said 17 were considered "walking wounded" and nine were more seriously injured in the incident. Of these nine, three were trapped in the wreckage and had to be released by firefighters, he said.

The fire service spokesman said the injured were taken to local hospitals in a fleet of ambulances. He said paramedics used minibuses at the scene as triage points.

The coach, owned by the Hornsby company, had been collecting passengers ahead of a trip to London.

A Humberside Police spokeswoman said the coach was in collision with the rear of a large skip lorry at Mortal Ash Hill between the Morrisons supermarket and the Corus steelworks.

"There were initially some passengers trapped, but that was due to damage to the bus door, rather than them being trapped in their seats," she said.

She said all the passengers were adults and most of them suffered minor injuries including shock, cuts and bruises. Four people were more seriously hurt, but their injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

"All the passengers and the driver were taken to hospital for checks. The driver was experiencing pain in his sternum but the extent of his injuries was not known."

At the scene, the damage to the grey-blue coach was clearly visible on the front nearside. But the vehicle was upright and remained on the dual carriageway.
