A mid-summer baby: Duchess of Cambridge due to give birth in July

The Duchess of Cambridge ended weeks of speculation today by announcing the royal baby will be born in July.

It means the child — who will one day reign whether a boy or a girl due to a law change — will share its birth month with Princess Diana who was born on 1 July 1961.

It was also revealed that the condition of the Duchess — who had been suffering with acute morning sickness — is improving.

Kate is understood to be around 13 to 14 weeks pregnant and confirmation of the birth month means it is likely she has now had her 12-week scan.

The St James’s Palace statement said: “Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to confirm they are expecting a baby in July.

“The Duchess’s condition continues to improve since her stay in hospital last month.”

The update is also further confirmation that Kate is expecting just one baby.

There had been speculation due to her suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum, which causes severe vomiting during pregnancy, that she had been expecting twins.

The condition — common with women expecting twins — is usually in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy and often eases off in the second trimester of pregnancy, which Kate is believed to be entering now.

Kate was last seen in public last Friday when she visited the National Portrait Gallery in London with William for the unveiling of her first official portrait.

She looked well and smiled during the brief appearance, with some commentators spotting the start of a slight bump.

The duke and duchess are preparing for their move into the apartment at Kensington Palace formally occupied by Princess Margaret.

They have advertised for a servant to attend to the royal household when the couple become parents this summer.

And while in days gone by the housekeeper was employed merely to clean and maintain the home, this newly available role demands the fulfilment of extra duties —including those traditionally undertaken by a valet, personal assistant, cook and even a chauffeur.

St James’s Palace has previously said that the couple prefer to keep their entourage as small as possible.
