A woman in her 70s died in a crash close to Stansted Airport on Wednesday, police said.

The single-vehicle crash on the Stansted-bound carriageway of the A120 happened just before 10am between the junctions with the B1008 Dunmow South and the B1256 Dunmow West.

Essex Police said on Thursday that a pensioner in her 70s had been killed in the collision.

The force said in a statement: “We were called to reports of a single-vehicle collision on the westbound carriageway of the A120, near Great Dunmow, at about 10.10am on Wednesday 27 March.

"Our officers closed the road in both directions while emergency services worked at the scene. Sadly, despite the best efforts of paramedics, a woman in her 70s died at the scene.

"We do not believe any other vehicles were involved and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

An air ambulance landed on the Braintree-bound carriageway as paramedics responded to the scene.

Drivers had been warned to avoid the area as police responded to the “critical” incident.

National Highways said on X, formerly Twitter, that the Stansted-bound carriageway reopened just before 2.15pm, around four hours after the collision.
