The discovery of explosive devices in aeroplane cargo has increased support for airport security checks, a survey has found.
Parcels originating from Yemen containing explosive material, addressed to synagogues in Chicago, were discovered on cargo aircraft at East Midlands airport and in Dubai last month.
Prior to news of the discovery 42% of a "representative sample" of the British population claimed they would feel more confident flying if current security checks at airports were maintained.
This rose to 50% after news of the discovery broke.
Tom Costley, Head of TNS Travel & Tourism said: "While many airlines have made it clear they believe airport security procedures are excessive, these findings suggest there remains a significant group of travellers who are reassured by Britain's vigilant approach to airport security, and have no desire to see it changed."
Of the travellers who took part in the TNS survey, a third said their main gripe with security checks was being asked to remove their shoes and belts.
A slightly lower number were annoyed over a requirement to restrict volumes of liquid in hand luggage to 100ml.
About a fifth said they thought it was unnecessary to remove a laptop from their hand luggage.
Only one in ten believed pat-down searches by security staff, along with requests to remove metal items such as keys and mobile phones, were unnecessary.
More than 1,000 British adults aged between 16 and 64 took part in the TNS survey.
