Andy Murray's Olympic gold post box knocked down by car in home town of Dunblane

A postbox painted gold to mark Andy Murray's 2012 Olympic triumph has been torn out of the ground by a car.

Pictures on social media showed the glimmering box lying on the ground in the tennis star's Scottish hometown of Dunblane.

A silver Mercedes allegedly rolled down the hill into the postbox, according to eyewitnesses.

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: "We're aware that the Andy Murray gold postbox has been knocked down and will look to reinstate it as soon as possible."

The post box was painted to commemorate Murray’s dazzling Olympic tennis victory over Roger Federer in 2012.

Other Team GB athletes, including Sir Chris Hoy, also received a painted postbox in honour of their gold medals.

A Police Scotland spokesman confirmed the accident in a statement, saying: "Police in Forth Valley attended at Dunblane High Street at around 7.50pm on Monday July 22 following a report of a low-speed collision where a Mercedes car struck a Royal Mail postbox.

"The female driver of the car sustained a minor injury but didn't require medical attention.

"Inquiries into this incident are ongoing."

A neighbouring resident said Royal Mail had been to the scene and had emptied the letters from the post box.

The tennis star's mother Judy Murray tweeted her reaction to the news in two words: "Oh no".

Other Twitter users responded with well-wishes, jokingly referring to Murray's return to form following major hip surgery.

“It’s like Andy - it will make a comeback. Still the one @Wimbledon,” commented one user.

“It'll bounce back, stronger than ever, after its operation,” wrote another.

“No worries @JudyMurray. Next year a new one will be installed in Dunblane after Andy and Jamie Murray win the Olympic doubles gold in Tokyo 2020,” added another.
