Asda plans to scrap free tea and toast for staff in the mornings as part of a controversial savings drive, according to reports.

The supermarket chain will stop providing breakfast perks, which also include coffee and vending machines, insisting it must make “tough decisions”.

The GMB union opposes the plan, with a spokesman telling the Sun it was a massive blow to “dedicated colleagues”.

He added: “We know from members this is an emotive subject.”

But an Asda spokeswoman told the paper it was “necessary to look at areas that are no longer financially viable”.

The move comes two years after canteen cutbacks across 200 stores nationwide and ahead of a plan to axe 200 senior jobs at its Leeds headquarters following a sluggish Christmas period.
