Defence giant BAE Systems plans to axe around 360 jobs at two of its shipyards, the company has announced.
A 90-day consultation has started with unions representing staff at two sites on the Clyde in Scotland after the company said it planned to cut a number of short-term, temporary posts filled by workers who had been brought in to meet peak demand on a number of contracts.
A company spokesman said: "BAE Systems Surface Ships has commenced consultation with its trade unions on a reduction of production jobs on the Clyde. Subject to consultation, this reduction will be met by the release of all non-core production employees.
"BAE Systems, in line with our commitments under the Terms of Business Agreement (ToBA) with the Ministry of Defence, is committed to maintaining the key industrial capabilities within our core workforce to deliver and support future complex warships within the UK. This strategy dictates the planned use of shorter term labour to meet such peaks of production."
A total of 4,000 permanent staff are employed at BAE's Govan and Scotstoun yards on the Clyde, currently working on the Royal Navy's Type 45 destroyers.
