Londoners preparing for a bank holiday getaway will have to pack their sunglasses and waterproofs as forecasters predict unsettled weather across the UK.

While Saturday looks set to be the warmest and brightest day for much of the country, Sunday and Monday could see the mercury fall with cloud and rain taking hold.

Met Office forecaster Calum MacColl said: "The highest temperatures are likely to be at the start of the weekend but at least there will be some sunshine throughout the weekend for many parts of the country.

"On Saturday we've got a ridge of high pressure over much of the country which should mean not too bad a day.

"Many areas should have variable bits of cloud with sunny breaks coming through during the day. Bar the odd isolated shower it's looking pretty good."

For those staying in the capital over the long weekend things look slightly better, with forecasters predicting cloudy but dry days and temperatures in the high teens.

"We're not doing too bad the further south you go," Mr MacColl said. "We could see 18 or 19C, and maybe even a 20C along the south coast."

"Temperatures by Monday will probably be back down to slightly below normal for the time of year," Mr MacColl explained. "Generally it's a cooler day on Monday."
