Banksy’s Brexit mural is to be torn down and sold for £1m after the mysterious street artist targeted a family property empire for the second time.

The mural, which shows a workman chiselling a star way from the EU flag, appeared on the side of an abandoned amusement arcade near Dover’s ferry terminal on Sunday.

The Godden family are reportedly set to sell the mural, having lost a High Court battle to sell another piece by the artist on a property in Folkestone three years ago.

According to the Telegraph, Jeremy and Jordan Godden have hired Robin Barton, who runs the Bankrobber Gallery in Mayfair, to sell the artwork for £1m.

He suggested the artist may have purposely painted the artwork on a Godden building after their failed attempt, calling it a “second chance” for the family.

Mr Barton told the newspaper: “Truth is stranger than fiction. Does Banksy want the walls to be sold? No.

“Does Banksy like the publicity? Yes. And he’s not stupid. He chooses the site of these works very carefully.

“We will probably never get to the bottom of why Banksy does what he does.”

Banksy claimed the artwork was his own on Instagram.

The Godden family were unsuccessful in their first attempt to sell a Banksy artwork, the ‘Art Buff’, after it transpired they were the tenants of the building and not the freeholders.

The family reportedly own a property empire that stretches across the Kent coast.

In a statement, the family said: “We are exploring options for the retention, removal or sale of the [Dover} piece.

"We will look to benefit local charities with proceeds from any sale of the piece."

Dover District Council recently pledged to introduce CCTV to monitor the artwork after it was defaced.

Since appearing, many residents in Dover have lauded the artwork.
