BBC Breakfast hosts fall for April Fools Brexit emoji joke

An April Fools news story about the launch of Brexit emojis caught out BBC Breakfast’s presenters.

Hosts Roger Johnson and Babita Sharma chatted away about the article published in today’s Observer.

It claimed an Italian tech firm were “cashing in” on political divides by introducing a ‘Brexit Bulldog' emoji and ‘Starry Blue' one for Remain voters.

Mike Bushell, who appeared on the show to discuss the Sunday papers, told the pair: “As soon as I saw this I thought ‘we have to do it’.”

The blunder was revealed by Johnson just eight minutes later.

He asked his co-host: “How are your foreign languages?”

“Good, brilliant,” she joked before shaking her head.

Johnson then admitted the appeared to have been written by “Scherzo Primavera” meaning “joke of spring” in Italian.

“Well done the Observer,” he said.

A blushing Sharma chimed in: “How did we not get that earlier?”

Steve Kay wrote on Twitter: “Did BBC Breakfast just fall for the Grauniad’s April Fools?”

Mark Craig added: “Whoever came up with #Brexit emoji idea at the #observer deserves a pay rise. Great that it fooled the @BBCBreakfast team.”
