The best Tube lines and stations for people to apply make-up have been revealed in a new study.

Vision experts Lenstore have analysed the 11 underground lines, taking into consideration things such as average temperature, how busy the line is, how fast it is and how much of it is above and below ground.

All factors were considered useful for applying a good face of natural looking makeup.

The Metropolitan was crowned the best line - mainly because it is mostly above ground (76.5 per cent) allowing for good light.

It is also one of the quieter lines, with an average ridership of 352,464 people, and has air conditioning, meaning make-up won’t slide off traveller’s faces.

Other Tube lines that topped the list included the Circle line, Hammersmith and City, District, and Bakerloo.

On the other end of the scale, the research found the Northern line is the worst Tube line for makeup application.

This was because it is one of the busiest Tube lines - with an average ridership of 1,123,342 - and has a high average temperature of 32.4

Victoria, Central, Piccadilly, and Waterloo & City were also below par, the research found.

Lenstore also analysed all 53 Tube stations in zone one, across four categories, to determine which one was the best for reapplying make-up whilst waiting for the next train.

These categories include the average temperature, whether it is under or overground, average station entries on a weekday and the age of the station.

Southwark came up top trumps, with Tower Hill, Bayswater, Pimlico and Edgware Road (Circle Line) completing the top five.

Bank and Monument topped the list as the worst make-up friendly stations.

Lenstore’s experts said while make-up application on the Tube is sometimes necessary for time-strapped Londoners, it is not the ideal place to put on your face.

Expert optometrist, Roshni Patel said: “Although in some cases, it may be necessary to apply make-up on your commute, I wouldn’t suggest making a habit out of this as you risk damaging your eyes.

“Firstly, the Tube isn’t the most hygienic place for makeup application and you may be opening your eyes up to various germs and infections. Additionally, trains aren’t the most sturdy and with them being busy the majority of the time, there’s a high chance you may poke yourself in the eye with your mascara wand or eyeliner, resulting in damaged corneas.”
