Bird Flu control zones to be lifted

12 April 2012

Control zones set up to prevent the spread of bird flu from farms infected with the disease in East Anglia will begin to lift from Saturday, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said.

As long as no further disease is detected, the 3km (two mile) protection zone put in to stop it spreading from Redgrave Park Farm where the virus was first discovered will lift on Saturday.

The second protection zone, around Hill Meadow Farm, Knettishall, on the Norfolk/Suffolk border where turkeys also tested positive for H5N1, will lift on Monday December 10, Defra said.

Both protection zones will become part of the surveillance zone, which will then lift along with the wider restricted zone on December 19.

Poultry owners in the restricted zone outside the surveillance zone will not have to house their birds indoors from December 10, Defra said.

The lifting of restrictions comes after the culling of thousands of birds on six premises in Norfolk and Suffolk after the deadly H5N1 was discovered on November 12.

An initial report into the outbreak was unable to identify "categorically" the source of the disease.

The epidemiological research found no evidence that the virus was introduced by infected poultry or poultry products, or by vehicles or people transporting them, from countries which have the disease in domestic flocks.

The preliminary report, published by Defra at the end of November, said wild birds could not be ruled out as the source of infection - although there was no evidence of H5N1 in wild birds in the area or Britain as a whole.
