This was the scene after a sports car dramatically plunged almost 20ft into the sea on the Devon coast.

The BMW Z3 convertible was travelling along a narrow coastal path between a railway and the waterfront near Teignmouth when it crashed at around 8am this morning.

It overturned after tumbling from the small road, with the driver miraculously escaping unscathed before walking half a mile for help.

The man, said to be 37 years old, managed to exit the car and reach the shore after it fell into the water, a spokesman for RNLI Teignmouth said.

The car was then left upside down on the beach as the tide went out.

Tony Watson, spokesman for RNLI Teignmouth, said: "We were called at about 8.15am to help with a car that was upside down in the water.

"The driver had got out of the car and walked back to Teignmouth which is about half a mile."

A coastguard spokeswoman said: "When we arrived the man had already been recovered from the vehicle. The ambulance service treated him at the scene."
