Boris unveils new diagonal crossing

12 April 2012

A £5 million scheme to ease congestion in the heart of London's West End has been unveiled by the capital's Mayor, Boris Johnson.

The scheme allows shoppers to cross the busy intersection at Oxford Circus diagonally as well as in straight lines.

Based on the Shibuya crossing in Tokyo, the Oxford Circus crossing will give shoppers and commuters around 70% more room in one of the most crowded city centre areas in Europe.

The scheme has involved traffic light rephasing, better access to Oxford Circus Tube station, and wider pavements and new lighting in Oxford Street and Regent Street.

Mr Johnson said: "This project is a triumph for British engineering, Japanese innovation and good old-fashioned commonsense. The head-scratching frustration caused by the previous design is over and we've brought one of the world's greatest crossroads into the 21st century.

"Being able to cross in an oblique rather than a perpendicular fashion will make Oxford Circus incredibly more efficient for the millions of pedestrians and road users that use the crossing every year."
