A tropical fruit which is a cross between a plum and a mango is set to go on sale for the first time in a UK supermarket.

The Bouea Macrophylla - or mango plum - will hit the shelves of Marks and Spencer this weekend.

The supermarket worked with specialist growers in Thailand for several years to develop the fruit, which has a bright orange edible skin.

It is described as firmer than that of a plum, and a sweet taste similar to that of an Alphonso mango but with a softer texture.

The fruit, which will cost £1 each, is also much smaller than a traditional mango and grows to two inches in diameter and four inches in length.

Marks and Spencer's fruit expert Shazad Rehman said: "We're really excited to be introducing the first mango plum to the UK.

"We know our customers like to try new and interesting fruit and we're sure this will be something they will really enjoy.

"It has a soft texture and all the delicious flavour of a mango without any of the hassle to prepare as you can eat the skin."
