'Brazen attack' on shot motorist

12 April 2012

Police have described the killing of a man who was shot at the wheel of his car as a "brazen attack".

The 35-year-old man - named locally as Derek Stevens - was fatally shot in the head while driving a gold Land Rover on Macket's Lane, Halewood, Liverpool.

A bullet was fired through the windscreen, causing the Land Rover to collide head-on with a stationary silver Ford Focus.

The man, who is from the Halewood area, died from the gunshot wound shortly after paramedics arrived on the scene.

The shooting occurred outside a parade of shops, including a dental centre, a tanning shop, and a taxi firm.

Police said the victim was known to them and that the shooting was not a random attack.

Knowsley Area Commander, Chief Superintendent John Young of Merseyside Police, said: "I would reassure our local communities that we are carrying out extensive investigations into the murder and the reasons for it. This was not an indiscriminate attack and we would not want our communities to be fearful of going about their daily business.

"There is a highly visible police presence in the area and our police officers and Community Support Officers will be talking to local residents and businesses to address any concerns they may have.

"We cannot be sure what the intentions of the gunman were that evening. However, this was a brazen attack which cost a man his life and we are determined to catch those responsible for it.

"If you were in the area of Macket's Lane between 9pm and 9.30pm on Saturday evening I would ask you to think carefully about what you may have seen."
