Brazil body-in-suitcase trial opens

12 April 2012

The trial has started of a Brazilian man who admits killing and dismembering a British teenager last year because she threatened to tell his parents about his drug use.

Mohamed D'Ali Carvalho Santos, 21, listened as witnesses described how he killed 17-year-old Cara Marie Burke, of Southfields in south-west London, then stuffed her torso in a suitcase.

The prosecutor in Brazil is asking for the maximum penalty of 30 years, while Santos' defence lawyer is hoping for a reduced sentence based partly on his client's heavy drug use.

Court officials revealed Santos wanted Miss Burke to marry him in Brazil so he could get British residency. Police said the two were not boyfriend and girlfriend.

Miss Burke's torso was found in a suitcase dumped on a rural riverbank near the central Brazilian town of Goiania in July.

Police spent the following days searching for the teenager's head, arms and legs, recovering the last part of her body in a river on August 6.

Her remains were finally flown to London in September after Brazilian authorities had made sure they would not be required as evidence in a trial.

Police said Santos, 21, killed Miss Burke with a butcher's knife on July 25 and then went to a funk concert before returning to his apartment to cut up her body.

He is alleged to have sent his brother a text message saying "the bitch is in the bag" while photos of Miss Burke's severed head and torso were also found on his mobile phone.

State court records described Santos as "a mentally perturbed, anti-social individual prone to having hallucinations".
