Bring birds indoors, farmers told

12 April 2012

Poultry owners living within the restriction zone set up following the outbreak of HN51 avian flu have beeen told to bring their birds inside.

Council workers are contacting owners of poultry and offering them advice following the outbreak at a Bernard Matthews farm at Holton near Halesworth in Suffolk.

Jill Korwin, assistant head of Trading Standards for Suffolk, said that everyone who owns poultry within the restriction zone, which covers 2090 sq km of east Suffolk and south-east Norfolk, must bring their birds indoors.

She said officers were using the National Poultry Register to identify owners and would also be relying on the general public to provide information about anyone who was not abiding by the regulations.

Mrs Korwin said: "We are contacting everyone and identifying premises significant in terms of keeping poultry to offer advice. Everyone within the restriction zone must bring their birds inside. We are also advising owners to make sure they have high standards of cleansing and disinfection.

"We are also advising people to make sure their birds' food is clean and is separate from wild birds."

She said it was hoped the outbreak had been contained. "At the moment we are very encouraged that it has been contained," she said.

"Our latest information is that the outbreak has only occurred in one shed out of 22.

"We are hoping that the restrictions that have been put in place to stop people moving birds, while they're going to be difficult for poultry farmers, will stop this disease from spreading.

"Poultry owners must keep their birds under cover."
