A British holidaymaker has been fined £3,000 after defecating on the tarmac of an airport runway in Brindisi, Italy.

About 50 horrified passengers saw David Sharp, 68, drop his pants and relieve himself after a three hour Ryanair flight from Manchester on September 30.

After relieving himself, Mr Sharp was stopped by police at the airport and released after questioning.

Officers later traced Mr Sharp and a friend to the Casa Barocco bed and breakfast in Lecce, where he was fined just over £3,000 for committing acts contrary to public decency.

The airport's deputy police commander said he "appeared to be the little worse for drink".
