Briton quizzed about 'baby snatch'

12 April 2012

A British woman accused of abducting a baby in Greece is to be questioned further by local police.

The 41-year-old woman is alleged to have snatched the infant from a 16-year-old girl - believed to be the child's mother - during negotiations to sell the child.

The Briton, from Warwickshire who has not been named, appeared before a public prosecutor in Athens for a hearing.

It is understood the legal session was held to enable police to detain the woman for a further 48 hours.

The 16-year-old Romanian girl told police her child was taken by the Briton last Tuesday as they discussed a price of 14,000 euros (£9,385) in Athens.

According to local reports, the pair were shopping in a supermarket for food when it is claimed the woman snatched the infant and ran away.

The mother told police she decided to report the alleged abduction because the child's father did not know she had travelled to Greece to sell their baby.

The 41-year-old was arrested on the Greek island of Kefalonia on Friday after returning the baby girl to a local clinic.

A Foreign Office spokesman confirmed the hearing had taken place, saying: "The woman appeared before a public prosecutor in Athens."
