Britons warned against Kenya travel

12 April 2012

Britons are being warned to stay away from Kenya as holidays to the country were suspended amid the post-election bloodshed.

British tour operators acted after the The Foreign Office advised against all but essential travel to the strife-torn East African country.

The suspension announcement came after a meeting of the Federation of Tour Operators (FTO), which said a further decision about holidays after January 5 would be made in the next few days.

About 6,000 Britons - including about 3,000 on package holidays - are currently on trips in Kenya where more than 300 people have died in bitter inter-tribal violence following the disputed presidential election.

The FTO said that it was hoped that tourists already in Kenya would be able to complete their holidays and return as scheduled.

Continuing violence prompted the the UK to change its advice from merely warning tourists to avoid certain areas to avoid travelling to the country altogether except for essential reasons.

The FTO said: "Customers due to fly in the coming days should contact their travel agent or tour operator. Alternative holidays for those customers will be offered where available or refunds."

Fears of further bloody clashes in the capital Nairobi were eased when opposition leader Raila Odinga again called off a protest rally.

But police fired tear gas and water cannons to beat back supporters who had gathered anyway.

The EU and the United States continued to press for President Mwai Kibaki and Mr Odinga to cooperate in coalition talks in a bid to halt the bloodshed, and the prospect of a joint envoy to the country has been floated.
