Broadband service has been restored to more than 20,000 UK homes affected by a technical fault.

BT said customers in Northern Ireland, the north of England and parts of Scotland experienced disruption following a problem with its Edinburgh exchange on Friday night.

Engineers worked through the night to fix the fault.

A BT spokesman said: "Following a technical fault at an exchange in the Edinburgh area which caused disruption to some broadband services, BT confirms that all services have been restored to customers.

"BT's engineering teams worked throughout the night to resolve outstanding customer issues and to monitor the performance of the network."
