Brown: Shilpa vote shows tolerance

12 April 2012

Support for Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty in Friday night's Celebrity Big Brother vote would be a sign of Britain's tolerance, Chancellor Gordon Brown has indicated.

Stepping into the Big Brother racism row for the third day running during his visit to India, the Chancellor stopped short of urging viewers to cast their votes to evict Shetty's main tormentor Jade Goody.

But he made clear that he regarded backing for the Indian actress as a positive way of getting across the message that Britain was "a nation of tolerance and fairness".

Speaking during a visit to a Bollywood film studio in Mumbai, the Chancellor said: "There is a lot of support for Shilpa. It is pretty clear we are getting the message across. Britain is a nation of tolerance and fairness."

And he added: "It is pretty clear how people in this Bollywood studio would vote if they had to vote."

Meanwhile, it seems Jade is such a dead cert for eviction that bookies have stopped taking bets on her.

Both Jade and Shilpa face eviction, but bookies Ladbrokes say there is no chance that Jade will escape the viewers' wrath to stay in the house. Ladbrokes spokesman Nick Weinberg, said: "Jade hasn't got a chance of surviving the eviction. It's so-one sided that we've closed the betting."

"The loudmouth was 1/100 before we decided to pull the plug," he added.

Meanwhile, Shilpa remains the firm favourite to win the reality TV show, on odds of 10/11, ahead of actress Cleo Rocos.

"There's only one winner as far as punters are concerned. It'll be one of the biggest reality TV shocks ever if Shilpa wasn't crowned queen of CBB," Weinberg added.
