Brown to update MPs on Afghan trip

12 April 2012

Prime Minister Gordon Brown will update MPs on the security situation in Afghanistan following his weekend trip to visit UK troops in the central Asian state.

The update will come in an oral statement to the House of Commons, in which the PM will also report back from last week's European Council summit in Brussels, which saw EU states agree on action to tackle climate change and a response to the economic downturn.

Mr Brown's statement comes amid mounting speculation that Britain will increase its 8,100-strong military force in Afghanistan as it scales down its commitment in Iraq in 2009.

US President-Elect Barack Obama is expected to announce a surge in American troops for Afghanistan after he takes office in January, putting pressure on Nato allies to do the same.

Asked at a press conference in Kabul on Saturday whether Britain was planning additional troop deployments, Mr Brown said that any announcement before the statement to MPs would be "premature".

"I have been taking stock, I have been talking to our commanders on the ground, I have been listening to people say about the progress that has been made in, for example, Musa Qala," said the PM.

"I will report to the House of Commons on Monday about that. I think it would be premature for me to make any announcement without reporting to the House of Commons."

Meanwhile, the President of Afghanistan thanked thousands of British soldiers for the sacrifices made as they fight to rid his country of religious extremism.

In an open letter to the British people, President Hamid Karzai expressed his gratitude for efforts made by British forces to purge the Taliban and build a free society. But the President warned British deployment in his country served to protect not only the Middle East but countries in the West, equally as vulnerable to terrorism.

The president requested continued support from the 8,100 British troops fighting "uncompromising religious extremism" which "profanes" the Islam faith.
