Four alleged smugglers have been arrested after police discovered 125 exotic birds squashed inside pipes on their way to the Philippines.

The Indonesian men were apprehended in separate locations after officers discovered a total of 41 endangered white cockatoos and 84 eclectus parrots.

They now face the possibility of up to five years in prison and a 100 million Rupiah (£5,600) fine if they are found guilty of trafficking.

The harsh penalties are part of the Indonesian government's clampdown on the country's illicit and lucrative wildlife trade.

Exotic birds are regularly poached and trafficked by smuggling gangs for sale as pets or status symbols.

Indonesia remains one of the largest homes to endangered bird species in the world - second only to Brazil.

It is reported that the birds are believed to have been on their way to Philippines - where is a large bird smuggling network - before they were intercepted.

The global white cockatoo population is estimated to be between 43,000 and 183,000 but this is in rapid decline due to poaching, trafficking and the destruction of habitats.

Eclectus parrots still exist in relatively stable numbers.
