Shocking moment builder is caught speeding at 151mph because driver was ‘late to work’

Police have released "shocking" video footage of the moment a builder was caught speeding at 151mph along a motorway because "he was late to work".

In the footage, captured by Sussex Police’s safety camera team, a black Audi can be seen travelling along the M23 at more than double the 70mph limit.

The driver, Ricardo Thompson, 21, a builder from West Sussex, said apologised in a police interview, explaining that his reason for speeding was to “get to work on time”.

Chris Snell, of the Sussex Police Safety Camera Team, said in a statement on Thursday: “Exceeding the speed limit is dangerous and can have devastating consequences.

“Every year, our officers have the unenviable task of passing a death message onto numerous families of victims involved in speed-related collisions.”

The footage was captured on the northbound carriageway at Crawley on August 25, 2018, as part of routine safety and enforcement checks.

Mr Snell, of Belvedere Avenue, Lancing, was later identified and summoned before Crawley Magistrates’ Court to face a charge of dangerous driving.

The 21-year-old pleaded guilty on May 22, and was banned from the roads for 15 months.

He was also ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work, and pay £85 costs and a £85 victim surcharge.

The video’s release comes as as West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service urges motorists to slow down as part of its speeding prevention month.

Sixteen people died and a further 239 were seriously injured in speed-related collisions in Sussex last year, according to the force.
