24 August 2012

A British man aged 20 who died while snorkelling in Malta was a Cambridge University student from Surrey, it emerged today.

The student, said to be Marcus Hughes-Hallett, disappeared after getting stuck in rocks beneath caves off the Mediterranean island of Comino, a tiny resort between Malta and Gozo.

Local media said Mr Hughes-Hallett was on holiday with his parents and his father raised the alarm when his son swam into a cave but didn’t come out.

Other holiday-makers swam into the caves and found him unconscious.

He was given mouth-to-mouth resuscitation but did not respond to treatment.
