Cameron looking to curb EU budget

Prime Minister David Cameron says he will try to force the European Union to make cuts
12 April 2012

Prime Minister David Cameron will lead a revolt next week to try to force the European Union to make cuts, he has said.

He told the Daily Mail that he has already had talks with the leaders of France, Germany and the Netherlands.

He said: "It is outrageous that the European Parliament claims it's being responsible by having a 6% rise in the budget.

"It is completely irresponsible and unacceptable. We need an alliance to block increases."

He said the French would be keen on budget restraint "and we should push this extremely hard. It should be a freeze or a cut".

Mr Cameron also hinted that he would rather continue with the cuts programme at home and serve just one term, than abandon the deficit reduction plan.

He said: "I'd rather lose the election saying the right thing than win it saying the wrong thing."
