Cameron slams leadership 'shambles'

12 April 2012

Tory leader David Cameron has accused Labour of descending into a "shambles" over the issue of the leadership.

Mr Cameron said the party needed to get on with picking a successor to Tony Blair so they could re-focus on the business of governing the country.

"It's a shambles at the moment - you've got them all fighting amongst themselves," he said in an interview with the XFM rock radio station.

"How much time do you think these people in the last few weeks have spent worrying about our troops in Afghanistan, or the NHS, or the schools we send our children to?

"They've been worrying about their jobs, and I think we've got to get on and have a new leader. I don't care who it is but just get on and have a well-organised Government.

"It might be a good soap opera, but if we want soap opera we should switch on the telly and watch EastEnders.

"We want government, we want some responsibility, we want them up take action to deal with things that are wrong in the country.

"We can't do that if Tony's slagging Gordon and Gordon's slagging Charles (Clarke)."

Mr Cameron, who was interviewed on the the Richard Bacon XFM Drivetime Show as part of his drive to reach a younger audience, disclosed that away from politics he liked sitting in front of the television channel-hopping.

"I'm a big fan of Spooks and I sometimes use UK Gold or whatever to watch all the old ones. I'm a man - I sit there with the remote control, flicking. That's what we do, and then our wives hit us and say 'Stop it, please put the remote control down'," he said.
