Campaign targets childbirth deaths

12 April 2012

A host of celebrity mums joined the Prime Minister's wife to launch a campaign aimed at raising awareness of mothers around the world dying during pregnancy and childbirth.

More than half a million women die each year from pregnancy and childbirth complications, with the vast majority occurring in developing countries.

The Million Mums campaign hopes to draw attention to disparities like this and fight preventable maternal deaths.

Sarah Brown, patron of the White Ribbon Alliance, the charity running the campaign, said action was needed.

"As the poverty goal that has seen no progress in 20 years, tackling maternal mortality must be a priority for all of us," she said.

"It is an outrage that 1 in 7 mothers can expect to die as a result of pregnancy in countries like Sierra Leone, compared to almost 1 in 50,000 in developed ones."

The Million Mums campaign hopes to bring a million mothers together to fight for the cause, as well as raise £1 million.

Supporters include Claudia Winkleman, Davina McCall, the Duchess of York, Kirsty Young, Kirstie Allsopp and Myleene Klass.

More information on the campaign can be found at www.millionmums.org.
