A boat has become submerged in the Kennet and Avon canal after it was reportedly rented for a stag weekend.

The canal boat became stuck in a lock in Widcome, Bath, before later sinking below the water level at around 2pm on Saturday afternoon

Surprised passers-by shared pictures of the sinking boat on social media websites, which can be seen surrounded by floating drinks cans.

The Canal and River Trust have put pollution mats into the lock in an attempt to soak up diesel.

A spokesman told the Bath Chronicle: “We are trying to determine the safest and quickest way of getting the boat out and we hope it will all be back to normal as soon as possible."

Nobody is believed to have been hurt in the incident.

The boat is currently blocking off a stretch of the canal to other punters, which is located in a popular section of the canal.
