Chocolate fans are up in arms after bags of Maltesers were cut in size by almost 15%.

Mars has blamed the shrink in sharing pouches from 121g to 103g on the rising production costs.

The change was spotted by food retail expert Steve Dresser who spread the news on social media.

He also noticed that packets of Mars’ Galaxy Counters had dropped in weight from 126g to 112g.

It comes in what is already a bad month for chocoholics, after the Toblerone manufacturer decided to change the iconic shape and size of the bars.

Their UK bars will now be made with a wider gap in between each peak – reducing the 400g bar to 360g and the 170g to 150g.

Mars said in a statement that it had been forced to choose between hiking the price of maltesers up or reducing the bag size.

The firm said: "Like all chocolate manufacturers, we have seen the cost of raw materials rise and, while we try to absorb these pressures as much as possible, sometimes we have to make the difficult decision to reduce the size of some of our products so our consumers can continue to enjoy an affordable treat.

The move has not gone down well on social media, with some users latching on to the #maltesergate to express their dismay. Others have suggested it may be another culinary casualty of June's Brexit vote.

Michael Bow tweeted: "Fish fingers, Marmite, Toblerone, and now Maltesers...the Brexit casualties continue to mount. Or is it just the volatile commodity markets?"

Thomas Wright added: "5 months after the EU Referendum, the Government still has no plan but we're going to have less Toblerone and Maltesers to comfort us."

"Our focus is always on offering consumers our great tasting, high quality chocolate brands at the best value for money."
