The Christian owners of a bakery who refused to create a cake with a gay marriage slogan on it say they believe God is on their side, ahead of a ruling in the case.

Daniel and Amy McArthur, owners of Ashers bakery in Northern Ireland, are in the midst of a legal battle after they rejected an order to make the cake featuring Sesame Street characters Bert and Ernie.

Customer Gareth Lee's legal challenge is being supported by the Northern Ireland Equality Commission, as he bids to have the bakery's actions ruled as discriminatory.

But the couple, who are being supported by the Christian Institute, have said they will not back down in the case, saying God has given them "the strength to deal with this".

District judge Isobel Brownlie is expected to deliver her judgement in the case tomorrow at Belfast County Court.

Ahead of the hearing, Mr McArthur, 25, said he could not be expected to ignore his religious beliefs at work.

He said: "Our faith is very important to us - it determines where we live, how we bring up our children, how we run our business, how we meet and engage with other people in society. So we can't leave it out whenever we go to work in the morning."

He continued: "It's been a difficult and exhausting time for us as a family but God has been faithful to us and he's given us the strength to deal with this."

Giving evidence in the county court, Mr Lee claimed the rejection left him feeling like a lesser person.

He said: ''It made me feel I'm not worthy, a lesser person and to me that was wrong."

The case has sharply divided public opinion in Northern Ireland, as well as making headlines across the world.
