A yoga teacher behind a campaign for a nationwide round of applause to show support for NHS staff and bring communities together has said the response from Londoners has been “amazing”.

Annemarie Plas, 36, from Streatham Hill, is asking people to express their gratitude to all carers — from pharmacists to nurses — by opening windows and clapping at 8pm tonight.

Ms Plas was inspired to set up Clap For Our Carers by similar campaigns in her home country, France, and Spain.

She posted on social media, calling on Britons to join in “from the sofa, garden, balcony, street or anywhere.

"Use hands, feet, pans, pot or just loud voices to shout this appreciation," she said.

Her post received support from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who posted the request on their Instagram, and celebrities including Victoria Beckham and Cheryl Cole.

Ms Plas said: “The response has been incredible, it’s hugely exciting to see so many people get behind it.”

People are being asked to share videos of it online.
