Climate change 'to affect holidays'

12 April 2012

Climate change could lead to the traditional British package holiday to the Mediterranean being consigned to the "scrapheap of history", a report has revealed.

Rising temperatures and higher sea levels might mean holidaymakers going on very different types of break by 2030, the study for Halifax Travel Insurance predicted.

Popular destinations such as Majorca and Ibiza could become too hot and bucket-and-spade packages could be replaced by British holidays or health, sport and cultural breaks, it added.

By 2030, sea levels could rise by 9.8in (25cm) and shorelines could retreat by as much as 1,230ft (375m). Holidaymakers will switch their main holiday from the summer to the winter or spring.

Long-haul spots like Florida could be hit by ever-more powerful hurricanes and a loss of beaches. Extremes such as drought, torrential rainfall and storms could increase.

The report said: "By 2030 the traditional British package holiday to a Mediterranean beach resort may be consigned to the scrapheap of history, replaced by a rise in tourists staying at home or engaging in health, cultural, sports and 'beauty' tourism."

It was produced for Halifax Travel Insurance by Professor Bill McGuire, director of the Benfield-UCL Hazard Research Centre at University College, London.

David Rochester, senior pricing manager at Halifax Travel Insurance, said: "With increased extreme weather events and dramatic temperature increases predicted, holidaymakers will be considerably more at risk abroad in 20 or 30 years than they are today. In addition to changes in where we want to go on holiday, there will be a change in when we want to go.

"A winter holiday to the Mediterranean and a summer holiday to Sweden might become a popular trend."
