A climber has died after falling near the summit of the UK's highest mountain.

Police received a report just before 11am of two people falling from what was described as a considerable height near the top of Ben Nevis.

Mountain rescue teams attended but one of the climbers had died. The other was taken to Belford Hospital in Fort William with serious injuries.

Northern Constabulary said no further details of the incident or the age or sex of the individuals will be released until next of kin can be notified.

As Britain's highest peak at 1,344 metres, Ben Nevis attracts around 125,000 ascents each year.
