The fractured relationship at the heart of the Coalition will be satirised by Armando Iannucci in a fourth series of In The Thick Of It.

The award-winning political comedy series, which spawned hit movie In The Loop, will return to BBC2 this autumn. Foul-mouthed spin doctor Malcolm Tucker, played by Bafta winner Peter Capaldi, will be back — in opposition.

Iannucci said: “This series [goes] into uncharted territory: a new coalition government, and Malcolm and Nicola fretting in the wings.”

BBC head of comedy Mark Freeland said: “I’m excited to see The Thick Of It return. No other show could coin the term ‘Omnishambles’ and see it become part of the political lexicon.”
