A close-knit community is struggling to come to terms with the tragic death of a six-year-old boy killed after falling through ice.
Ben Newell and his 12-year-old brother Dylan were playing on an icy fishing pond near Red Lane, in Streethouse, near Pontefract, West Yorkshire, on Saturday, when it cracked, plunging them both into the water.
Dylan was pulled out by rescuers but despite desperate attempts to retrieve Ben, he later died in hospital.
Charlotte Clerehugh, head of Streethouse Junior and Infant School, paid tribute to "livewire" Ben and sent a message of support to his family.
She said: "Our thoughts are with the family at this very sad time. Ben was popular, full of fun and real livewire who will be missed by all his friends and teachers. I will be talking to all the children in assembly and helping them to come to terms with what has happened. We are sending our sympathy and love to Ben's family."
Ben and Dylan are believed to have lived on a housing estate across the field from the fishing pond, where they were well-known to many of the residents who battled to rescue them.
The pond has frozen over again but broken shards of ice could still be seen below the surface.
A fresh layer of snow covered bunches of flowers and a teddy bear which had been laid on the top of the pond, while a solitary white rose had become frozen into the ice.
Toys and flowers had been left next to the scene of the accident in tribute to the young boy. A Liverpool Football Club scarf hung between two trees, and balloons were tethered to branches.
Mourners laid fresh flowers among the snow-covered tributes, which were placed around cards addressed to a "much-loved son" and a "sadly missed brother".
