A man was nearly “beheaded” after cycling into a length of barbed wire which had been stretched across a popular bike trail.

Ben Threlfall, 31, was leading a group of other cyclists along the path in Rhondda, Wales, on Saturday when he hit the deadly wire, which had been strung between two trees on either side.

The metal snare snapped on impact, but threw him from his bike. He then had to prise the wire from his neck after it cut his upper body and slid up to his throat.

The mountain bike guide told Wales Online: "It threw me off my bike and I honestly thought that my head was going to fall off. I thought 'this is the point where I'm going to die'.”

"If that had happened to someone smaller or lighter, the barbed wire wouldn't have snapped and it would have taken their heads off their shoulders,” he added.

“No doubt they would have died.”

South Wales Police said they were investigating the incident, which Mr Threlfall thinks was an attempt to put cyclists off using the track.
