Cyprus base fire victims named

12 April 2012

Two people killed in a house fire on a British military base in Cyprus have been named as RAF Corporal Andy Greenough and his five-year-old son Evan.

The third victim is believed to be Cpl Greenough's two-year-old daughter Nia, a relative said.

The Ministry of Defence has confirmed Cpl Greenough, 37, from Abertillery, South Wales, and Evan died in the fire at RAF Akrotiri on Saturday night.

The third victim is yet to be formally identified, but Cpl Greenough's cousin, Leonard Greenough, said the family understands it to be Nia.

Mr Greenough, from Cwmtillery, Abertillery, said: "It's devastating, it really is. We're all terribly upset about the news. He was a very nice lad and we just don't know what happened. We're a very big, close family."

He said Cpl Greenough's parents, Glyn and Wendy, had flown to Cyprus in the early hours of Sunday after being told of their son's death. Mr Greenough added that his cousin's wife is not thought to have been in the house at the time fire broke out.

Cpl Greenough, who also leaves a sister, Leanne, worked for the Cyprus Service Support Unit and had been in the forces for 17 years.

An MoD spokeswoman said the cause of the fire, near the port city of Limassol, was being investigated.

Cpl Greenough's son, Evan, was described by the MoD as "a beautiful, bubbly little boy, whose cheeky smile will be sadly missed by his classmates and teachers at Akrotiri Primary School".

Cpl Greenough was said to be a committed member of the RAF who was a "popular and enthusiastic member of the community".
