Oscar winner Daniel Kaluuya worried his mother is going to be unhappy about his ‘sex’ joke

There might be a slightly frosty reception waiting for Daniel Kaluuya when he gets back to London after he made a risqué remark during his Oscar winner’s speech.

The actor, who grew up in north London, accepted his best supporting actor Oscar for his role in Judas and the Black Messiah, in front of a star-studded audience in Los Angeles while his mother and sister watched back in London.

They were gazing on with pride as the actor urged his Hollywood contemporaries to “celebrate life” but were left with their heads in their hands as he went on: “We’re breathing, we’re walking. It’s incredible. Like, my mum, my dad, they had sex – it’s amazing! I’m here. I’m so happy to be alive and I’m gonna celebrate that tonight.”

Cameras showed his mother seeming to say “What is he talking about?” while his sister hid her head in her hands – images which were immediately repeated on social media countless times.

The star admitted he might have talked himself into trouble, telling reporters backstage his mum was “not going to be happy” about his joke.

Kaluuya, who started with stage and TV roles including in teenage drama Skins, won an Evening Standard Theatre Award for his role in the boxing play Sucker Punch and got his big Hollywood break in the 2017 horror satire Get Out which earned him his first Oscar nomination.

Since then he has become an international star with roles in the Marvel film Black Panther and Steve McQueen’s heist thriller Windows.
