Vapers should always ask permission before using e-cigarettes and apologise for blowing smoke in a person’s face, according to a new guide by etiquette experts Debrett’s.

A study by the “recognised authority on etiquette, influence and achievement since 1769” showed that third of people asked were unsure about where e-cigarettes are permitted.

The guide urges users to ask office, restaurant and shop workers if they are allowed to vape before starting up.

Following a poll of 2,000 people about their views on the issue, Debrett’s also encourages e-cigarette users to apologise for blowing a cloud of smoke in someone’s face.

The guide also brands vaping in a confined pace such as a lift, as “the most serious breach of etiquette”.

Vaping in a car, restaurant or on public transport is also frowned upon.

The guide reads: "Civilised vaping is dependent on good manners, from vapers and non-vapers alike ... In the same way that while the use of mobiles in public places is unrestricted, choosing to take a call at a restaurant table or in a quiet railway carriage can be seen as inconsiderate."

Katherine Lewis, from Debrett's, told the Times: "Etiquette is still being established. It's not difficult to be a respectful vaper though you just need to be courteous and ask permission before engaging in behaviour that may affect others."

Elly Criticou, from vaping service Vype – who coordinated the study - said: “Some 79 per cent of those we surveyed[2] said that vaping is more common now than it was just two years ago, but it was also obvious that vapers and non-vapers are struggling to navigate the social niceties of vaping.

“As vaping grows we want to do our bit to help vapers be considerate of others and non-vapers be more accepting – good etiquette will go a long way to address this.”
