A London deli owner has pledged “footballing revenge” on his Croatian wife as England line up against the country for their Euros opener at the weekend.

England were knocked out of the World Cup by Croatia three years ago prompting much furore at the north London home of Chris and Ana-Maria Stewart.

The family owns the Taste Croatia deli in Borough Market which specialises in food and drink from his wife’s home country.

But despite his love for all things Croatian, Mr Stewart, 52, said England comes first with football and vowed revenge for the semi-final defeat that left him a figure of fun in the family home.

He said: “Last time was terrible, I was horribly teased. This time it’s going to be different, we have a much better team. Croatia aren’t what they were and we are going to get revenge.”

However, the couple’s daughter Isabel, nine, is predicting a Croatia win.

She said: “Croatia will win again, 4-3 is my prediction. It does get noisy but it’s good fun.”

The family are inviting friends to their Crouch End home and husband and wife will be at opposite ends of the sofa.
