Massive explosions were heard across Yorkshire after a huge blaze broke out at a scrapyard, according to reports.

Huge plumes of smoke could be seen for miles around Dewsbury after the fire took hold at 5pm on Friday night.

Firefighters could be seen pumping water out of a local canal in order to contain the fire as locals handed them crates of beer.

The brigade said everyone is accounted for at the industrial site in Saville Town where the fire broke out.

Witness Ayah Alfawaris, 32, was visiting Dewsbury for the first time from Leeds when she saw the huge blaze.

She told the Standard: “We were in an uber on the way into town as fire brigades started coming.

“They blocked the roads leading to the fire but people were all gathered around curious as you’d expect.

“The pub sent the firefighters a beer crate for later. Word came to the pub that it’s a fireworks factory at first.”

West Yorkshire Fire Service said: “We currently have 12 fire engines & specialist units in attendance at a fire at an industrial unit in Saville Town in Dewsbury.

“All persons are accounted for. “
