‘Divorcees ruining the Good Life for housebuyers’

Couples who divorce in their fifties and sixties are to blame for pushing up house prices, says actress Penelope Keith.

The married Good Life star, 73, said older divorcees were stoking the housing market by buying up flats and smaller properties for their new single lives. So-called silver separation is on the rise —but Keith said that rather than giving up, couples should be taught how to stay together.

She told Country Life magazine: “I read of affordable houses that are £300,000. Sorry? Affordable for whom? If only we could educate people to go on living together for longer. It’s all these single dwellings, all these women in their fifties and sixties who suddenly want their own space. To do what?”

But family law partner John Nicholson said: “People live healthier, longer lives and wish to pursue other relationships.”
