Driver held after six die in crash

Six people have died in a crash between a car and lorry on the A607 near Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire Police have said.

The lorry driver, a 48-year-old man from Melton Mowbray, has been arrested in connection with the incident.

The six people who died were all travelling in the car, a black Ford Mondeo. Police say they are all believed to be young but their ages are not yet known.

Police were called to the scene a mile south of Melton Mowbray town centre at 1.54am.

The car is believed to have been travelling towards Leicester.

A section of the A607 is closed while a police investigation is carried out, and it is expected to be closed for most of Thursday.

Diversions are in place but police have warned motorists to expect delays.
