A motorist who was killed in a drive-by shooting as he waited at traffic lights has been named by police.
Paul Anthony Pike, 23, was blasted with bullets as he sat at the wheel of his red Ford Transit van in Crosby, Merseyside, at around 11.20pm on Saturday night.
Mr Pike died at the scene and his girlfriend, who was sat in the passenger seat, suffered minor injuries caused by flying glass.
Merseyside Police said the motive remains unclear but Mr Pike was already known to officers and his shooting is being treated as a targeted attack.
Detective Chief Inspector Tony Doherty, who is leading the inquiry, said: "This is somebody's son who was shot dead in the street. He didn't deserve to die like that.
"The bullets could have struck anybody and we will not tolerate the criminal use of guns. Mr Pike was known to us and is from the Netherley area of Liverpool.
"He was passing through Crosby with his girlfriend and, as well as the forensic examinations and patrols in that area, we will also be increasing patrols and conducting investigations in Netherley."
Mr Doherty said the van was about two or three cars back in the queue at traffic lights on Crosby Road North when a silver Audi car pulled up alongside and the gunman opened fire.
Police are still trying to identify how many shots were fired. Witness statements suggest a number of rounds were directed from the Audi to the van before the car turned around and drove back towards Mr Pike's vehicle and more shots were fired.
Afterwards, the Audi was driven off along Stuart Road and abandoned on Fairfield Close, Crosby, then set alight.
