The Duchess of Cambridge stepped out into the public spotlight today for her first official engagement since her pregnancy was announced.

She joined husband Prince William to officially welcome Singapore's President Tony Tan as he started a four-day State visit visit to the UK.

It was Kate's first official appearance for more than two months since August 5 when she visited the Tower of London poppy exhibition.

She has been forced to pull out of several scheduled engagements due to severe morning sickness.

The couple greeted the President and his wife at the Royal Garden Hotel, Kensington and then traveled with them to Horse Guards Parade where The President was met by the Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh and received a Ceremonial Welcome.

Kate, 32, was wearing an Alexander McQueen coat and Jane Taylor hat.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were later expected to join The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh in the carriage procession returning to Buckingham Palace.

Prince William remained at the Palace to join the private lunch which The Queen will host for the President.

Afterwards the party will view the Royal Collection display in the palace Picture Gallery.

Later today Kate will also attend the Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2014 awards ceremony at the Natural History Museum in London.

Since the palace revealed her pregnancy Kate has been splitting her time between Kensington Palace and her parents’ home in Bucklebury, Berkshire while struggling to cope with her severe morning sickness, a condition called Hyperemisis Gravidarum.

It was her first official public outing since announcing her second pregnancy

Her public appearances follows a Kensington Palace announcement yesterday that the couple are expecting their second child in April.

In the statement, the palace said the duchess continued to suffer from extreme morning sickness but her condition was "steadily improving"

The announcement mentioned their "baby" - appearing to rule out out the possibility of twins, which had been widely speculated upon.

It means will be around 21 months between Prince George and his new brother or sister, a similar age gap between Kate and her younger sister Pippa Middleton.

The third-in-line to the throne was born on 22 July last year to a worldwide fanfare.

Kate is reported to have said she would ideally like to have three children.

For the second time, the couple were forced to announce a pregnancy before the duchess passed the significant 12-week milestone.

Hyperemesis gravidarum affects 3.5 per 1000 pregnancies and causes severe vomiting and causes dehydration and weight loss and build up of toxins.
